Luggage information

Bring up to three pieces of luggage onboard and help make everyone’s journey more comfortable by popping your case in its proper place.

Every case has its place

Each passenger is allowed a maximum of one large suitcase, one carry-on bag, and one small handbag. Sticking to our luggage limit and storing your bag in the correct place on the train provides a comfortable experience for everyone and helps us to keep trains running on time.

You should always:

  • Check what you’re allowed to bring first. Each customer is allowed a maximum of one large suitcase, one carry-on bag, and one small handbag.

  • Only bring what you can comfortably pick up yourself. If your bag is too heavy to pick up, our staff won’t be able to lift it for you.

  • Let other customers board the train first if you’re travelling with lots of luggage or larger items. This prevents queues at the doors while luggage is being stored and helps us to depart on time.

  • Only store large items in the racks at the ends of the coaches. Space in these racks is limited, so please store small and medium-sized bags and suitcases under seats or overhead.

  • Give yourself plenty of time, especially if you’re travelling with luggage. Find your boarding zone on the platform and when it’s time to leave the train, give yourself extra time to gather your belongings and make your way towards the doors.

  • Small bags

    Small bags

Small bags (backpacks, handbags, holdalls and smaller suitcases) fit under your seat. Tuck it in so you don't trip if you need to get up.

  • Medium bags

    Medium bags

Holdalls, cabin-sized suitcases and overnight bags need to go above your seat in the overhead racks. There's also space between some seats where you can stow smaller cases safely. If your bag is heavy, please store it in the luggage racks at the end of coaches.

  • Large bags

    Large suitcases

Only heavy items and large suitcases (up to 80x57x30cm) should be placed in the racks at the ends of the coaches, as space here is limited. Store items on their sides to make the most of the available space.

On 9 car Azuma trains, there are also luggage storage cupboards in Coaches B and L.

  • Very large bags

These may need to be placed in a dedicated storage area. Please ask a member of our team for assistance.

The maximum bag size on our trains is 90 x 70 x 30cm.

  • Pushchairs and buggies

Pushchairs need to be folded or collapsed before boarding and stored in either a luggage rack, cupboard or the gap between seats. Please don’t block the door or aisles. Find out more about travelling with children onboard our trains.

  • Bikes onboard

If you’d like to carry a non-folding bike, you’ll need to make a reservation before you travel. Reservations can be made online using our seat and bike reservation tool, at a Travel Centre, or by getting in touch.
