New LNER research reveals the UK’s most colourful autumn escapes
24/09/2025

New research from LNER has revealed the best weeks to experience autumn colour across the UK, helping travellers plan scenic getaways during one of the most vibrant times of the year.
As summer fades, towns, cities and the countryside transform into a blaze of crimson, gold and amber, making Autumn the perfect season for day trips, weekend escapes and family adventures.
Commissioned by LNER, the Autumn Beauty Index draws on climate records, details of local tree species, and thousands of photos from across the country, to show when each destination reaches peak colour. An interactive map highlights the best weeks to visit, along with recommendations for parks, walks and easy train connections.
The guide shows that destinations along the LNER route offer some of the most spectacular autumn scenery. From the Scottish Highlands, to Yorkshire and the East Midlands, travellers are spoilt for choice when it comes to seasonal escapes by train.
Edinburgh shines in autumn, with peak colour expected from 24 September to 1 October 2025. The city’s dramatic skyline is matched by leafy spaces like The Meadows and Princes Street Gardens, perfect for family strolls and picnics. For sweeping views, a walk up Arthur’s Seat or Calton Hill puts the whole city in a striking autumn backdrop, all just minutes from Edinburgh Waverley railway station.
Bradford comes alive with autumn colour between 8 and 15 October, with Lister Park and Peel Park providing open lawns, walking trails and family-friendly spaces. Cartwright Hall and its Mughal Water Garden are particularly photogenic during this window. With new, direct LNER services between London and Bradford Forster Square — including earlier arrivals and regular departures — it’s now easier than ever to enjoy a full day in the city as it celebrates its year as UK City of Culture.
York glows with hues of autumn between 10 and 17 October, when the medieval city walls are draped in gold and russet leaves. Families can enjoy a scenic circuit of the walls before heading into Museum Gardens, with its Roman ruins and wide lawns to explore. Rowntree Park offers younger children plenty of space to play beneath autumn trees, while Homestead Park’s formal gardens and tree-lined paths make for a picturesque seasonal stroll. With history at every corner and leafy escapes minutes from York station, it’s a picture-perfect autumn break.
David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: “The Autumn Beauty Index is designed to help people plan smarter and make the most of the season.
