FAQs

What is happening to make tickets simpler?

We understand that rail travel can sometimes be confusing which is why we are committed to making tickets as simple as possible. Following customer feedback to our initial pilot, we are simplifying tickets across our route.

Since 11 June, we have removed most return tickets as an option to buy for LNER managed journeys. You will be able to mix and match rail tickets to get the best value and flexibility for your journey.

Please note, you can still see and be able to purchase return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.

What are the changes to ticket types?

When buying LNER tickets, you will no longer be able to purhase Return tickets for the majority of LNER journeys. Instead you can choose from the following single tickets in both Standard and First Class.

Fixed (Advance Single)
For travel on a specific train at a specific time

Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak Single
For travel on any less busy train outside of peak travel times (in First Class it is called an Off-Peak Single)

Fully Flexible (Anytime)
For travel on any train at any time

Please note, you will still see and be able to purchase Return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.

Why are the return tickets changing?

We know from your feedback that choosing rail tickets can be confusing. So for us at LNER, it is important to make choosing rail tickets simpler for everyone.

With most return tickets on LNER journeys being removed, you need one single ticket for each leg of your journey. This means you can enjoy excellent value tickets in advance, and flexible travel options for last-minute journeys.
