Motherwell's name comes from an ancient religious monument – the Mother's Well – dedicated to the Virgin Mary. You can still stand at the place where the well was located, marked by a plaque on Ladywell Road.

After an exciting day out, explore Motherwell's rich history at the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre. As well as fascinating exhibitions, the tower at the Centre is one of the landscape's most prominent features. Choose a decent day, get climbing and you can enjoy views stretching across the Clyde Valley and beyond.
