Family travel between 17 cities

Family Singles are valid to and from London King's Cross and 16 different cities. You can even travel between other cities like York and Newcastle or Newcastle and Edinburgh. Use the dropdown at the top of the page to find out where you can go from your nearest station.

Your Family Single offers an all-in-one ticket for your family at a fixed price for each leg of your journey. You only need to buy one outbound ticket and one return ticket that covers everyone. Family Singles start at just £27.50 between Peterborough and London and between York and Newcastle.

One ticket covers travel for up to two adults and four children up to 15 years old all for the same great price.

Make your return journey whenever you want

Our new Family Single tickets add extra flexibility to your family journey. You can book your outbound and return journey separately.

That means you can guarantee your great outbound price, even if you haven't finalised your return trip yet.

Travelling with under 5s?

Normally under 5 year olds travel for free on our trains and don't need a ticket. This means they also don't get a seat.

If you're travelling with under 5 year olds, they need to be included in your total when booking your Family Single ticket.

The new Family Lounge, created by LNER along with other train operators, offers a space for children to play and explore, whilst parents can take a break.

 

Open during travel centre hours, area is a welcoming space for families travelling by train. Please be aware that children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

No, LNER Family Single tickets are non-refundable.

No, LNER Family Single tickets are non-changeable. You can only travel on the specific date, time and trains you select when you booked. So if you miss your train, you'll need to buy new tickets.

Yes, you’ll need to reserve a seat for all those travelling when you book your LNER Family Single ticket. You will automatically be assigned seats when booking and can change them in your LNER account after booking.

No, LNER Family Single tickets are only valid in Standard.

If you decide not to travel due to disruption, you can claim a refund on any unused tickets without needing to pay an administration fee.

What is considered a family when purchasing a Family Single?

A family is defined as being between a minimum of 1 adult and 1 child (aged 5-15 years old inclusive) up to a maximum of 2 adults and 4 children (aged 5-15 years old inclusive). The group size must be specified when you buy the ticket. All tickets required for travel must be bought at the same time. By the way, you don’t all need to be related!

Can I take my pram onboard the train with me?

We’re very happy for pushchairs, prams and buggies to be on our trains, just as long as you make sure they’re folded at all times and stored the same way as any other item of luggage.

If this is not possible, then please speak with the Train Manager.

Terms and conditions
  1. LNER Family Single tickets are sold subject to availability and for travel on LNER services only.
  2. LNER Family Single tickets aren't valid with any other train company. If you're not sure whether a certain train is run by LNER, check with station staff before boarding.
  3.  Tickets must be bought by 23:59, at the latest, seven days before your outward date of travel.
  4. An LNER Family Single is for one journey only. Two LNER Family Singles, one for outbound and one for return, would need to be purchased for a return journey.
  5. Tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable.
  6. Customers must board and leave the train at the stations shown on their ticket. No break of journey is allowed, unless a change of train is required which is specified on the ticket. 
  7. LNER Family Single tickets are only valid for travel between certain stations as outlined above.
  8. LNER Family Single tickets only apply to a family buying all tickets required for travel at the same time. For the purpose of this ticket, a family is defined as being between a minimum of one adult and one child (aged 5-15 years old inclusive) up to a maximum of two adults and four children (aged 5-15 years old inclusive). The family size must be specified at the time of purchase.
  9. The National Rail Conditions of Travel state that children aged under five years old travelling with an accompanying fare-paying passenger can travel free of charge, but they are not guaranteed a seat. In order to reserve a seat, we recommend that children aged under five are included as part of the overall number of people travelling as part of the LNER Family Single ticket. Children aged under five who are travelling free of charge and do not travel as part of this ticket may not be able to have their own seat on busy trains. Including a child aged under five as part of the group travelling under the LNER Family Single ticket, to reserve a seat, is entirely at the discretion of the person purchasing the tickets.   10. LNER Family Single tickets are available only in Standard.
  11. LNER Family Single tickets are not valid in alongside any upgrade offers, such as Weekend 1st or SeatFrog, and can't be upgraded to First Class.
  12. Seat reservations are compulsory and free of charge. Customers must travel on the trains shown on their tickets and sit in the seats reserved.
  13. The full group must travel together for the entire journey on the trains specified on their tickets and in the seats stated. Customers travelling on different trains to the ones reserved, or travelling as part of a different group size, will have to purchase new undiscounted tickets at the full Standard Anytime fare onboard, as if no ticket is held.
  14. LNER Family Single tickets are available to buy online, at stations and through third parties such as travel agents. These tickets can't be sold onboard or through station self-service ticket machines.
  15. No further Railcard or Group discounts apply.
  16. All travel is subject to The National Conditions of Travel, copies of which may be obtained from station ticket offices or on the National Rail website, here.
