A Departure Board With A Difference Arrives At York Station
11/04/2025

Following stops at London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, there’s a new arrival at York Station as LNER welcomes a special departures board, showing customers the difference they are making for the planet by choosing to travel by train.
Data shows LNER trains produce seven times less carbon dioxide emissions than driving*, and fifteen times less than flying**.
The LNER Carbon Saving Departures Board brings to life these figures in a unique, educational and fun way.
Located near the newly opened Family Lounge at York Station, the Carbon Saving Departures Board is a traditional split-flap travel information board with a contemporary twist. The board equates the emissions that passengers save travelling by train with LNER from York Station on a typical day, as opposed to car and plane, to easily recognisable objects, places and animals, such as football pitches, swimming pools and even T-Rexes.
Warrick Dent, Responsible Business Chair at LNER, said: “It is wonderful to bring our Carbon Saving Departures Board to York just in time for Earth Day later this month. Our research found that 75 per cent of us admit to finding the terminology used in climate conversations confusing. As our customers start planning their summer holidays, we hope this is a fun and tangible way for customers to understand the positive impact each of them makes by choosing to travel by train.”
