The Hatchling

A ground-breaking outdoor theatrical performance – The Hatchling unfolds over a weekend as we see our colourful character hatch, build a nest and prepare to spread their wings and fly the nest. It’s a spectacular sight to see and well worth stopping to take it all in. The whole event also features other exhibitions and activities, so be sure to check it out.

The Hepworth Wakefield

An award-winning art gallery on Wakefield’s historic waterfront – what’s not to like? Designed by David Chipperfield, The Hepworth Wakefield is home to an impressive compendium of contemporary and modern British art, including works by L.S. Lowry. It also has one the UK’s largest free public gardens which opened in 2019.

The Holmfield Arms

Located right in the heart of Wakefield, The Holmfield Arms is a lovely hotel and bar combo. After a great night sleep, head down to the restaurant for breakfast. Then, after a big day out exploring the area, come back and enjoy a delicious dinner (and maybe a little tipple) before heading to bed to prepare for the next day. It’s delicious convenience at it’s best.

The World’s First Nature Reserve

The grounds of Walton Hall, a stately home built in 1767, became the site of the world’s first nature reserve at the hands of pioneering 19th century environmentalist Charles Waterton. His work is celebrated in A World of Good, a multi-sensory exhibition hosted by Wakefield Museum until July 2022.

Pontefract Cakes

Pontefract is known for its castle, a once-fearsome fortress which bore witness to some of England’s most momentous historical events earning itself the name “Key to the North”! But few know of its ties to liquorice. It is not known who brought liquorice to Pontefract, but the area’s soft loam was perfect for its roots. In 1760, sugar was added to the recipe, beginning the region’s long-standing relationship with confectionery.

Where to eat in Wakefield

Robatary

Robatary describes itself as ‘where Yorkshire meets the Pacific’ – the best bits of Yorkshire cuisine with influences from countries across the Pacific, including Indonesia, Peru and the west coast of America. Here you can try a bit of everything with their small plates or go all in on their set menu options. With Japanese style cooking over an open flame, it’s a real hot spot for dining in Wakefield.

Iris

For something a little more elaborate, try Iris on the Bullring. Classic English cookery and a great Sunday lunch. They also have regular events like a food-tasting quiz, where you guess the ingredients of the dishes you are served. 10 plates from around the world and also guinea pig night where they present dishes from their new menus. It’s a busy place so you should try to book.
